I swear I had no idea of Eben Moglen's recently unveiled idea for distributed personal servers.  I haven't listened to this yet, but I'm going to take a wild guess I arrived at some of the same conclusions he did.

My thought, more people would probably run their own internet servers if they were dead easy to set up and it wasn't quite so vital to choose just the right hosting service. Strikes me that most of the configuration we have to deal with nowadays could be heavily streamlined into a number of common usage cases. The fact that web hosting services can largely use simplified dashboards (and they still offer more options than most people need) suggests it's so.

One nice thing about having more private servers out there is that you could start targeting them for apps that distribute the kind of services we currently rely on Big Service Providers like Google, Evernote, Facebook, and Yahoo for. I have friends in most of these companies, and they companies do awesome stuff, but they're gaining serious control in social, personal data storage, and media content service.

The problem is that these three (overlapping) industries are the ones that tend to naturally snowball in ways that hurt the consumer if they go unchecked. They're either hard to pull out of (personal data) or hard to ignore because all your friends (social) or favorite content (media) are there. Keeping an open internet means there must be viable competition created for these services, and created in such a way that they don't tend to naturally snowball themselves.

Dear You,

This is a little unusual, me-now writing to me-later (or from your point of view, you-then writing to you-now) but I feel it's an important step.

Been awhile since I've done a beatboxing post. A year or two's practice has taken me a bit further, though plenty of amateur mistakes are still there. I'm to the point where A) I need to start practicing to a metronome a lot more often and B) need to start studying drum arrangements to learn some new rhythms.

Traded a crappy mic for a crappy camera re: recording, so you can actually see goofy beatboxing face--check that slammin' preview still shot!

For whichever reason suits you, hope you enjoy.

I know I have a few friends who either might be interested or know someone who is. This is for Platform/Server QA. The right experience level is high-mid or senior, and you should understand Un*x/web platform testing.

Note that the resume doesn't go back to me. :)

There is a QA Recruiting Event at Ning this coming Tuesday, January 26th.

Our team is looking for multiple QA Server Engineers to join our team and in one day, we’re giving individuals the chance to meet with key decision makers for this position.

This event bypasses the typical interview process, which can take 2 weeks and include 1-2 phone interviews and 1-2 in-person interviews. This is a one-day event, with a one-round interview and 24-48 hour turnaround.

If anyone is interested, please send your resume to Priya Patel at priya@ning.com. She’s the lead Recruiter for this event and will be happy to give you more details.

It's a time for tough decisions, and I've made one. I've spoken with the chair of BayCon 2010 and volunteered my time for staff, once we've figured out what position makes sense.

I wonder what would happen if you turned loose a bunch of computer scientists to analyze known phenomena of the universe in terms of computational theory.

Does anyone know if this has ever been tried in anything other than coincidental ways?

...at least it's nice to know I'm not the only one who's seriously considered these possibilities:
